ST. PATTY´S DAY

El sábado pasado, diecisiete de Marzo celebramos St. Patrick´s, patrón de Irlanda. Ésta es probablemente una de las festividades más importantes en Estados Unidos, y por supuesto en Chicago, donde muchos irlandeses se instalaron a principios del siglo XX. Todo el mundo se vuelca a la calle, la actividad comienza pronto en Chitown, a las diez de la mañana tiñen el río (literalmente) de verde. El río en Chicago es más bien una especie de embalse ya que para evitar que la contaminación llegue al lago, el ayuntamiento decidió hace años reinvertir el curso del río, esto propicia que al teñir el río, el agua permanece verde durante todo el día ya que no hay corriente.

 Al medio día empezó la Parade que recorría el centro, principalmente por la calle Columbus hasta Millenium Park. Antiguamente la Parade se realizaba en los South Suburbs pero el descontrol era tal que el alcalde la trasladó al centro. Sobre las doce, andar o pasear por el Loop era ya del todo imposible, una marea verde inundaba las calles de la ciudad. A esa hora había quedado con Mark Liew de Zurich Suiza para ver la Parade y hacer unas cervezas en la calle (es de los pocos días que puedes beber alcohol por las calles de forma legal). Después de un par de horas dando tumbos encontramos casualmente un bar que sirven Estrella Damm en el centro de Chicago, (para los que quieran ir, se llama Purple Bar y está en Michigan Avenue con Hubbard St., también sirven tapas y tienen una buena selección de vinos) así que decidí tomarme una pensando en el anuncio de este verano …tonight tonight tonight…

 Tras dar unas vueltas más y comer algo, nos encontramos con Fèlix Tarradellas, de Zurich LATAM y continuamos nuestro particular pub crowl en Sweetbar, una terraza con música en directo cerca de la Magnificient Mile, a esas horas la mayoría de la gente iba bastante perjudicada, la fiesta duró toda la tarde y parte de la noche.

 ST. PATTY´S DAY (english)

Last Saturday, March, 17th was St. Patrick´s day. This is probably one of the most well known parties in the States, and particularly in Chitown, as many Irish came last Century and settled here. People from all over the Midwest flew in into the city for the party. People took the streets to hang out since early in the morning, the official activities organized by the Council started at ten when they color the river. Chicago River is very static as the Council reimbursed the course of the river to avoid polluting the lake, that actually helps keeping the green in the water throughout the whole day.

The Parade started at noon in Columbus, right next to Millenium Park. Previously this Parade was held in the South Suburbs, in the Irish neighborhood, but given it was too dangerous, the mayor decided to move it to the Loop. Around twelve, it was literally impossible to walk Down Town as for the amount of people dressed in green that took every street. At that time, I had arranged to meet Marc Liew, a colleague from Home-Office in Switzerland to go and follow the Parade and have some street beers (this is one of these few days you are allowed to drink alcohol in the streets). After a couple of hours hanging around we found a dive bar called Purple Bar in Michigan and Hubbard that had Estrella Damm (Barcelona local beer).

After a couple of more bars we met with Felix Tarradellas from Zurich LATAM and kept with our pub crowl in Sweetbar in a terrasse with live music, at that time, most of the people were already quite wasted… yet the party went on and on all through the afternoon and night.
